Neymar could return to Barcelona, ‘discussions’ taking place with the Catalan giants over ‘tantalising’ summer transfer

Neymar Jr. has been given hope of a sensational return to Barcelona, with reports suggesting discussions are underway between the Brazilian star and the Catalan giants. After leaving Paris Saint-Germain in 2023 for a high-profile move to Al-Hilal, Neymar’s stint in Saudi Arabia was marred by injuries, limiting his appearances. Last month, he parted ways with Al-Hilal and joined his boyhood club Santos on a six-month deal in Brazil’s Serie A.

While Neymar’s return to Santos has been celebrated, the 32-year-old reportedly has his sights set on returning to Europe to prepare for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. According to The Athletic, Neymar is prioritizing a move back to Barcelona, with initial discussions already taking place between his representatives and the La Liga leaders.

Speaking to The Athletic, journalist David Ornstein highlighted Neymar as a player to watch in the summer transfer window. “The remarkable situation currently being explored is a return to Barcelona,” Ornstein said. “This would be Neymar’s dream, and discussions are ongoing. Barcelona president Joan Laporta and Neymar’s agent Pini Zahavi share a close relationship, which could facilitate the move. Playing at the rebuilt Camp Nou ahead of the 2026 World Cup has fairytale potential.”

Neymar’s short-term contract with Santos reportedly includes an option for early termination if he joins a club competing in the Club World Cup in June. Ornstein added, “Unless an extension is signed, Neymar will become a free agent on June 30. There’s also a mechanism allowing him to leave sooner for teams in the Club World Cup. His physical and technical condition will be key.”

Neymar’s potential return to Barcelona would mark an emotional reunion with the club where he spent four successful years from 2013 to 2017. However, questions remain about his ability to regain top form after recent injuries. If completed, the move would not only strengthen Barcelona’s attack but also align with Neymar’s ambitions for one last major chapter in Europe before the World Cup.
