Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly in the frame to be the new Manchester United gaffer if the under-pressure Erik ten Hag is sacked.
News is circulating that United are reportedly weighing up the chances of appointing the Argentine to replace the Dutchman with after the latter missed out on the job two years ago.
Pochettino had left Stamford Bridge by mutual consent on Tuesday evening (May 21) despite an end-season upsurge guiding the Blues to 6th place in the table with a run of five straight wins and a place in the Europa League, unless United against all odds beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final to demote the Blues to the Conference League.
Apparently Poch’s availability could seriously impact Ten Hag’s position at Old Trafford, which has long been under threat and especially after the Red Devils finished 8th in the table with a negative goal difference.
Pochettino had been in a ‘two-horse race’ with Ten Hag to land the United job in April 2022 as his time at Paris Saint-Germain was drawing to a close then, according to The Sun. But after talks with then-United bosses Richard Arnold and John Murtough, they opted for the Dutchman instead due to his supposed depth of knowledge of United and his ideas to return success to Old Trafford.
Ten Hag’s appointment was clearly indicated in his first season in charge as the Dutchman lifted the Carabao Cup and secured a 3rd place finish to return United back to the Champions League.
