The Guardian newspaper has voted superstar Lionel Messi the top-ranked player among the leading 100 best players in the world in 2022. Not long ago, the Argentine player was also voted in the same position by World Soccer magazine.
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, these voting results are assisting Messi in achieving the 8th Ballon d’Or title in his career as it now appears the Argentine player will have no competitors th is time around.
British newspaper The Guardian commented: “After a poor 2021-2022 season, when he first arrived at PSG, no one knew what could await Messi in the 2022 World Cup campaign taking place at the end of the campaign year. However, he is back after a summer of hard work and brilliance. Scored goals or provided assists in most of the games he played before the World Cup (only 4 games out in Ligue 1 ). And in Qatar, of course, he played brilliantly, helping Argentina win glory for the first time since winning the World Cup in 1986.”
Messi also had the distinction of winning the Golden Ball award for the best player at the 2022 World Cup, scoring 7 goals and providing 3 assists.
These achievements will in no small way help Messi towards securing the 8th Ballon d’Or title in his illustrious, unrivaled career. And this will be an even greater certainty if he were to help PSG win the Champions League this season, Marca reports.
In the list of the top 100 best players in the world in 2022 voted by The Guardian, this is the 6th time Messi has emerged the leader. His arch rival Cristiano Ronaldo has dropped out of the top 10 and is currently ranked 51st.
