Kylian Mbappe has made a stunning revelation he spoke to Liverpool about a potential transfer before committing to Paris-Saint-Germain – all due to his Mum being an ardent Reds fan.
The 23-year-old had purportedly disenfranchised himself from Real Madrid by signing a new contract with his current employers although the Reds were heavily in the mix to sign him. Mbappe had appeared to be Madrid-bound before finally commiting to remain with the Parisian Ligue 1 champions.
Premier League giants Liverpool had also been linked with an interest in Mbappe in recent years, with fans calling for the club and billionaire owners FSG to splash the cash and sign him, despite manager Jurgen Klopp repeatedly insisting they are not in the race.
Coincidentally Mbappe has now made the disclosure that Liverpool had indeed been part of the dialogue involving him though they had a better opportunity of signing him a few years ago.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Mbappe said: “We talked a little bit, but not too much. We talked a little bit.”
The France striker explained Liverpool’s best chance to sign him was in 2017 – the year he signed for PSG from Monaco, joining initially on loan before a stunning £163million transfer to the Parc des Princes.
And, most surprisingly – his talks with Liverpool were all courtesy of his mum somehow being a Liverpool fan!
“I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favourite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool. I don’t know why, you will have to ask her.
“It’s a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It’s a big club.”
Mbappe’s comments come after Klopp was asked about the French superstar earlier this month.
Asked if Liverpool even held an interest in Mbappe, the German boss said: “Of course we are interested in Kylian Mbappe, we are not blind.
“We like him and if you don’t like him then you have to question yourself.
“But, no, we are not and we cannot be part of these battles.
“There must be other clubs involved and that is fine. He is a great player.”
Mbappe most recently rejected a move to Real Madrid to stay at PSG, with certain sour-pussed sources salaciously spreading reports that he reneged on a long-standing agreement with the Spanish giants.
Although Mbappe was available on his Bosman status this summer, with his previous deal expiring at the end of the season, it’s unlikely Liverpool would have been able to compete with the ginormous figures bandied around over his wages.
Mbappe has explained that money had nothing to do with his decision not to join the Los Blancos, insisting he feels he is not finished with the Parc des Princes club.
“I would like to announce that I have chosen to extend my contract at Paris Saint-Germain, and of course I am delighted,” Mbappe said in a press conference.
“It was last week [he made the decision]. I didn’t announce it to my teammates because the club didn’t want me to. They wanted that to remain a secret and a surprise for everybody, even though it was hard to keep surprises.
“I think a lot of people had some information on Saturday. I wanted to call the Real Madrid president Florentino Perez before announcing it at Paris Saint-Germain.
“I have a lot of respect for him and their club they have done a lot to make me as happy as possible. As a respectful person I owed it to them to speak to them personally I thought that was the best thing to do.
“I am convinced that here [at PSG] I can continue to grow at a club that provides everything necessary to perform at the highest level.”
