French giants PSG are one of the clubs being most strongly linked with Argentinean superstar Lionel Messi as he enters the last few months of his contract at Barcelona and former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has told the Parisien club they should focus on securing the long-term futures of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe rather than trying to sign Lionel Messi.
The Ligue 1 club has been strongly linked with a move for theBarcelona talisman, whose contract at the Nou Camp expires at the end of the season. However, to facilitate this, they may need to let either Neymar or Mbappe depart in order to be able to afford his mammoth wages.
French World Cup winner, Mbappe, has once again been particularly impressive this season, scoring a sensational hat-trick to inspire his side to a 4-1 win against Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Addressing beIN Sports, Wenger offered advice that PSG should give serious thought to their priorities going forward when queried should they try to sign Messi:
“That is another question because Lionel Messi demands a huge investment.
“I would say PSG should be more focused on keeping their two best players and invest all the money they have in these two players.
“Mbappe is 22, the best player in the world maybe or the future best player in the world. When you have the next two best players in the world, you keep them.”
Following his stunning performance at the Nou Camp, Mbappe himself refused to give much away when the question was put to him about his future in addressing transfer links to Real Madrid or Liverpool, saying:
“It would be stupid to decide my future on a single match.
“The truth is that it is about reflecting for the long term. I have always said that I am happy here. This sort of match makes me even happier.”
PSG now look in good stead to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League when they take on Barca in the second leg in Paris on March 10.
