It’s undoubtedly a strange situation for football to resume without its biggest backers: Fans. But Italy’s football federation (FIGC) wants to allow fans to enter the stadiums, with the hope that the number of COVID-19 cases decreasing in the next couple of weeks.
The Italian season returned with a Coppa Italia semi-final second leg as Juventus and Napoli through to the final that will be held on Wednesday before Serie A resume on June 20.
“Yesterday, we took the last step towards dispelling any doubts about the completion of the season,” FIGC president Gabriele Gravina told.
“I’m happy but there is still one piece missing, which is the participation of the fans and I hope they can return very quickly. I hope it will be the beginning of July the first week or mid-July at the latest.
“This will mean that our country has thrown off those final restrictions and that we’ve come out of this particularly dark moment for our country.”
If Serie A succeeded, fans in other top European leagues such as Premier League might be able to enter the stadium too.
