Muangthong United completed a deadline-day deal for Uzbekistan National Team midfielder Sardor Mirzaev from Lokomotiv Tashkent.
The side have finally signed the long-promised AFC quota player and announced the deal during their annual curtain-raising event yesterday.
Mirzaev currently has six caps for Uzbekistan under his belt, having most recently featured for the side back in 2019. He joins Muangthong after five seasons with Lokomotiv Tashkent and made over 100 appearances for the club.
In terms of where Mirzaev could fit into the team, Muangthong coach Alexandre Gama told Football Tribe in an exclusive interview that his side was looking for a new ‘Number 10,’ or attack-minded box-to-box midfielder who can contribute to the side’s goal tally from midfield.
As a result of this transfer, the side have loaned out Jesse Curran to T2 side Udon Thani FC, seeing as they will not be able to register him as an ASEAN player until he has been capped by the Filipino national team.
Additionally, Muangthong were expected to announce the signing of experienced right-back Anawin Jujeen on their season-opening event as well. The 32-year-old played under coach Gama at Buriram United, where the pair won two Thai League titles and is available on a free after being released by the now-disbanded PTT Rayong.
