Tony Popovic: I want to win silverwares with Perth Glory

New Perth Glory coach Tony Popovic has expressed his target of leading the club to a period of sustained success.

Last weekend, Perth Glory unveiled former Western Sydney Wanderers boss Tony Popovic as their new coach for the next three A-League seasons.

Glory were a powerhouse in the now-defunct NSL, but they are yet to win any silverware in 13 seasons of A-League.

Meanwhile, Popovic had enjoyed his glorious days at Wanderers as he led the club to the AFC Champions League title in 2014, and also three A-League grand final appearances.

In an interview with SBS The World Games, the 44-year-old could not hide his excitement with his upcoming spell with Perth.

“We want to win things,” Popovic said.

“We’re not going to put a time frame on when that will happen. But we want to be a team that can be challenging for honours in year one, and why not?

“I don’t think the team in the first year will be exactly what I want the team to be.

“But I’m not going to make an excuse and say, ‘OK, let’s wipe the first year and say we need time to put this into place’.

“I believe we can still be successful in the first year.”
