Arsenal’s preparations for Champions League stumbles at Bournemouth

Arsenal’s preparations for their Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain suffered a setback as they were defeated 2-1 at home by Bournemouth in the Premier League. Declan Rice gave Arsenal the lead in the 34th minute on his 100th appearance for the club, finishing a move set up by Martin Odegaard.

However, Bournemouth mounted a strong second-half comeback at the Emirates Stadium, with Dean Huijsen equalizing through a header from a long throw-in in the 67th minute. Eight minutes later, Evanilson scored the winner from a corner, completing Bournemouth’s first-ever league double over Arsenal and boosting their hopes for European qualification.

The defeat marks a worrying domestic slump for Arsenal, who have won only three of their last ten league matches and have dropped points from a winning position in four of their last five games. This poor run threatens not only their bid to finish runners-up in the Premier League for the third consecutive year but also their Champions League qualification, with Manchester City and Newcastle closing the gap behind them.

Arsenal’s defensive frailties from set-pieces were again exposed, conceding two goals from dead-ball situations-Bournemouth’s long throw and corner proved decisive. This is part of a larger pattern this season, with Arsenal conceding 11 and 12 goals from set-pieces respectively, ranking among the worst in the league for this vulnerability.

Despite the loss, Arsenal must quickly regroup ahead of the crucial Champions League clash in Paris, where they will need a significantly improved performance to overturn the 1-0 deficit from the first leg and reach their second-ever final in the competition. Meanwhile, Bournemouth’s victory elevates them to eighth place, keeping their faint hopes of European qualification alive should certain conditions in other competitions be met.

In other Premier League action, Aston Villa kept their Champions League hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Fulham, Leicester secured their first win since January by beating Southampton 2-0, and relegated Ipswich fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Everton in the latter’s penultimate match at Goodison Park.
