Liverpool gunning for next Mbappe could spell bad news for Alexander Isak and Darwin Nunez

Liverpool are shifting their summer transfer focus away from Alexander Isak and setting their sights on Hugo Ekitike, a rising star in European football often compared to Kylian Mbappé. Despite Isak’s impressive 22 Premier League goals this season and interest from top clubs like Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea, Liverpool are reportedly deterred by Newcastle’s steep £150 million asking price, especially if the Magpies secure Champions League qualification.

Ekitike, 22, currently shines at Eintracht Frankfurt, having scored 22 goals and provided 10 assists in 45 appearances this season. The French under-21 international moved permanently from PSG to Frankfurt last summer for around £30 million and has drawn praise for his pace, technical skill, and goal-scoring instincts, earning comparisons to Mbappé. Although contracted until 2029, Ekitike’s price tag is expected to be significantly lower than Isak’s, making him a more viable target for Liverpool’s recruitment strategy.

The club’s recent Premier League title win and Champions League qualification will boost their transfer budget, enabling them to pursue Ekitike aggressively. This move is likely to signal the end of Darwin Núñez’s time at Anfield, as the Uruguayan striker’s limited playing time and recent social media outburst have cast doubt on his future. A potential sale of Núñez could help finance the acquisition of Ekitike, who also qualifies to represent Cameroon internationally.

Liverpool’s new manager Arne Slot is expected to receive funds to strengthen the squad, and the pursuit of Ekitike fits the club’s plan to inject youthful talent and dynamism into the attack. While Isak remains a top striker in the Premier League, financial pragmatism and long-term planning appear to be steering Liverpool toward Ekitike as the “next Mbappé” and a key figure in their future forward line.
