Manchester United are taking the gamble of opening a Pandora’s Box and risk incurring the unholy wrath of their entire dressing room by handing their diva midfielder Paul Pogba an eye-watering £500,000-per-week deal that would make him the Premier League’s highest earner.
The Old Trafford top brass are set to face a heavy backlash from a likely mutinous squad after tabling a deal to make the French World Cup winner their highest-earning player, with the Mirror reporting that he has been offered a whopping £500,000-per-week deal.
Pogba has been under intense scrutiny in recent weeks, both for his expiring contract and his lackluster performances at Old Trafford, with reports suggesting his heart is set on leaving. The midfielder has yet to show his acceptance of the offer that would see him earn a base salary of £400,000, with the other £100,000 coming in bonuses.
And the latest news is that a source is already predicting a revolt from the squad as a result of the offer, saying: “Some of the players think it’s out of order he could be getting twice as much as they are when he hardly starts a game and talks about leaving all the time.”
Should Pogba put pen to paper on the deal he would replace Cristiano Ronaldo as United’s highest-paid player as the latter only currently takes home £450,000. David De Gea is the second-highest earner on £375,000-a-week, while Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane earn £300,000-a-week with Bruno Fernandes on £250,000-a-week.
Pogba made a return to United after initially leaving the club on a free in 2012 for a then-record £94.5million fee and was then one of football’s hottest properties during his brief stint in the Serie A with Juventus, but has since failed glaringly to live up to that hype at Old Trafford to the extent that fans even vandalised United’s training ground at Carrington with messages of ‘Pogba Out’ in 2019. The status quo hasn’t changed since then with Pogba currently having difficulty finding game time under Ralf Rangnick.
Pogba is supposedly courted by both Real Madrid and PSG, who are both said to be hoping to land the Frenchman when his deal runs out.
