Liverpool fans were quick off the gun to begin their long-awaited celebrations as it looked like their Premier League title was to be confirmed earlier last night.
The celebrations were already beginning to kick off when it was clear that Manchester City seemed to be struggling against Chelsea in this crucial decisive match for Liverpool. After the win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday Liverpool knew they would be confirmed as champions if City were unable to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
And Liverpool fans prepared for the outcome by hosting parties across Merseyside.
In the aftermath of the coronavirus, the Premier League is being completed behind closed doors, meaning supporters are compelled to watch the remaining games from home and not from inside the stadiums.
And Liverpool fans had set up their houses near Anfield in anticipation to celebrate winning the title.
It began well for Liverpool with Christian Pulisic capitalising on a Benjamin Mendy mistake to put Chelsea ahead in the first half – and the Reds on course for the title – despite City’s initial dominance.
City made a valiant comeback and pegged Chelsea back in the second half with a goal from Kevin de Bruyne via a free kick to put the bubbly momentarily on ice for Liverpool fans.
The cork was about to be popped off the bottle when Willian scored from the spot after Fernandinho was sent off for a handball to put the Blues back in front and Liverpool on the verge of the title.
And the final whistle came shortly after to confirm Liverpool as champions and the bubbly flowed to spark off the real celebrations.
It had been 30 years since their last top flight title and their first ever Premier League win. One that has come at record speed with Jurgen Klopp’s juggernauts so impressive.
Around the country Liverpool fans erupted with joy. And around Anfield Liverpool fans were struggling to contain themselves.
Klopp though was keen to play down the importance of the Chelsea-City game after Liverpool’s win over Palace.
“This game is a really important game to watch for plenty of reasons,” he said. “Whatever happens… we have no influence on it so I have no interest.
“It will happen when it happens.”
