La Liga targeting opening stadiums for the last four matchdays of the season

Cadena SER’s ‘El Laguero’ program has focused on the return date for fans’ entry into stadiums for La Liga fixtures, saying it is edging closer. The Spanish Ministry of Health has apparently already received the proposal and are reportedly close to approving it.

The targeted date for reopening is the weekend on 9th May, which would allow fans to be in attendance of key games that are crucial in the context of this season’s heated title race, like Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid against Sevilla.

The opening of stadiums would then hold through for the final four matchdays of the La Liga 2020-21 season, with the attendance reportedly not exceeding 5000 people as the government and Spanish football federation will aim to ensure a staggered and secure return to capacity as the Covid-19 pandemic situation improves. It is reported by COPE that the government believes the Spanish economy will benefit from the fans’ returns as the tourist season rolls around.

Coincidentally, the weekend of 9th May is also when the Spanish state of emergency is scheduled to be called off.

If the initial proposal is not approved, the aim then is to open stadiums up for at least the final two matchdays of the first division season. The second division clubs would reportedly be content with this decision as the promotion playoffs will be held in June.

After plans to allow fans to return to stadiums fell through back in November, this is the first positive sign for stadium doors opening to the public once again. The last time fans were allowed into Spanish stadiums was all the way back on the 8th March 2020.
