English Premier League side Newcastle United have singled out former Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur coach Mauricio Pochettino as their number one choice to take over at Saint James’ Park, according to SkySports.
Newcastle, who are undergoing a takeover by Saudi royals, could soon become one of the richest clubs in the Premier League and are already looking to flex their financial muscle.
As per SkySports, Newcastle are willing to offer Pochettino £19m per year, which would make him the league’s second-highest-paid managed behind Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
Pochettino is one of the most highly regarded coaches in Europe, having turned Spurs into consistent title contenders, and is widely praised for his attractive and expansive style of play.
This announcement will come to the dismay of Steve Bruce, who has done well to keep the side clear of the relegation zone with a limited budget. The Magpies currently sit 13th with 35 points collected from the 29 games played before the enforced break from COVID-19.
However, this move comes as no surprise for the side which is looking to become a top-four or even title contender with the new investment. Expected to take over after the end of the current season, Pochettino will be tasked with replicating the rebuilding job he undertook at Spurs, but with potentially more financial backing than in his previous role.
