Argentina star Javier Mascherano announced his retirement from international football following World Cup exit.
The 34-year-old midfielder revealed his decision immediately after his side suffer a 4-3 defeat by France in the Last 16.
It’s time to say goodbye, it’s time to support from outside,” he told the reporters, as quoted by The Mirror.
“I hope that in the future these boys can achieve something.”
Mascherano is bowing out for Argentina after 146 internationals since his debut in 2003, scoring three times. During his stint at the national team, Olympic golds in 2004 and 2008 were his only tournament triumphs.
The veteran midfielder left Barcelona in January and is now plying his trade with Hebei China Fortune in the Chinese Super League after winning the Spanish La Liga titles five times and the Champions League twice.
