Australia are knocked out of 2018 World Cup following the 2-0 loss to already-eliminated Peru in the Group C.
The Socceroos needed to win to have any chance of reaching the last 16, but their disappointing defeat left Denmark and France as the qualifiers of the group.
Peru opened the scoring by the left-footed volley of Andre Carrill from the edge of the box in the 18th minute. It was Peru’s first World Cup finals goal for 36 years.
Desperately Australia tried to respond to earn the equalization, but their hope was faded out when Peru captain Paolo Guerrero scored the second five minutes into the second half.
Coach Bert van Marwijk finally had to throw out his trump cards Tim Cahill and Daniel Arzani from the bench, but none of his strikers had been able to find the net.
Meanwhile, France and Denmark drew 0-0 to make Les Bleus topped the group.
