Australia announce final squad for 2018 World Cup, with Tim Cahill survives the cut

Bert van Marwijk has named his final 23-man Australia squad for the World Cup, with veteran Tim Cahill looks set to play in a fourth World Cup finals.

Along with Cahil, 32-year-old defensive midfielder Mark Milligan is also included in the Socceroos squad for a fourth successive tournament.

Van Marwijk named late cover Jamie Maclaren in his squad, as well as injured Tomi Juric. Maclaren had been left out of the provisional 26 for intensive two-week training camp in Turkey, but was called up when Juric became an injury doubt.

Meanwhile, English Premier League players, including Huddersfield’s Aaron Mooy and Brighton’s Mat Ryan, are also included, with Melbourne City rising star Daniel Arzani is made for the final cut.

“Every step of the selection process has been difficult because the players have all given everything to make the final selection,” Van Marwijk said from the team’s training camp in Turkey, as quoted by Reuters.

“I believe this group of players can do Australia proud at the world’s biggest football tournament if we continue to work collectively and intensively over the next two weeks and into the competition.”
