Former Sydney FC Mark Rudan named as Wellington Phoenix’s new head coach

Former Sydney FC Mark Rudan has been named as Wellington Phoenix’s new head coach, the club announced on Wednesday.

In this disappointing 2017-18 A-League season, in which Phoenix finished ninth in 10-team A-League, the club sacked the previous coach Darije Kalezic in March and interim coach Chris Greenacre take over for the rest of the campaign.

Rudan, who captained Sydney FC to the inaugural A-League title in 2006, has signed a two-year deal with the New Zealand side.

“It was very important for us to find a coach who understood the Australian and New Zealand culture,” Phoenix general manager David Dome said, as quoted by The Guardian.

“When Mark’s name came across our desk, he stood out as someone who would be that kind of coach, who can do a lot for Wellington.

“There are two more years left on our current license. We all understand that the club needs to succeed, the club needs to perform.”
