Tan Cheng Hoe targets first victory with Malaysia

Newly-appointed Malaysia national head coach Tan Cheng Hoe targets a win in his opening match in charge to restore the confidence of the players.

Taking over the post from Portuguese Nelo Vingada, Cheng Hoe has almost a year to prepare for AFF Cup, which is the highest target of the national team in 2018.

However, he declined to set a specific target for the tournament.

“The AFF Cup is my main assignment but I don’t have any target yet,” said Cheng Hoe, as quoted by the New Straits Times.

“The important thing now is to get the confidence back among the players. The first match we play will be important which is why I am trying to find a suitable opponent before we play Lebanon.”

On March 27, Cheng Hoe had to earn a consolidate win in the final Asian Cup Group B qualifier against Lebanon. The 49-year-old urged the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to organize a friendly match before leaving to Beirut.
