Kawasaki Frontale claimed their first J-League title after thrashing Omiya Ardija 5-0 in the final day of the season on Saturday.
The victory helped Kawasaki overturn the two-point deficit since eight-time champions Kashima were held to a goalless draw away to Jubilo Iwata.
Both teams finished the season with 72 points but Toru Oniki’s team finished ahead of Kashima by superior goal difference.
Hiroyuki Abe took the lead for Kawasaki in the first minute and captain Yu Kobayashi doubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time.
Kobayashi made it 3-0 on the hour mark and completed the hattrick with a penalty kick in the 81st minute.
Tatsuya Hasegaya completed the big win for the hosts in the sixth minute of injury time.
