Newly appointed coach Park eyes 2020 Olympic berth with Vietnam

Newly-appointed Park Hang-seo has targeted a 2020 Olympic berth with Vietnam U-22 team, according to an exclusive interview with Korea news site Chosun.

“My contract with Vietnam teams starts from this October and will be expired at the end of 2019. The term of this contract is 2 years and 2 months. I have to lead both the national team and U-23 team. Obviously, I must have a strong heart for those heavy missions,” Park said.

Talking about his target in the next two years, the 60-year-old insisted: “In short, I want to take Vietnam football forward. I expect the team to grow strongly in the 2019 Asian Cup and even earn a berth in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.”

Park was an assistant for head coach Guus Hiddink of the South Korean national team in World Cup 2002. He played a role in South Korea’s fourth place, which has been the best an Asian side has ever performed in the competition.

After that, the Korean coached his country’s U23 team to a bronze medal at the 2003 Asian Games.
