Chelsea are drawing very close to confirming the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager, according to talkSPORT.
The former PSG and Tottenham Hotspurs manager is known to have verbally accepted the job two weeks ago and is now in the final stages of concluding a full agreement over his contract as Chelsea’s new manager where his immediate priority would be to stop the rot and bring them back to winning ways.
Pochettino, set to take over from interim boss Frank Lampard at the end of the season, has been out of work since leaving his post at Paris Saint-Germain last summer and had periodically been linked with a return to Tottenham. Somehow Spurs seemed to have directed their attention elsewhere, leaving the Argentine to take up the west London offer.
Although the 51-year-old will be inheriting a star-studded squad, Pochettino is aware his immediate task would be to instill a winning mentality into his side after an immensely turbulent season for the Blues.
Chelsea are already learning to live with the disappointment of missing out on European football next season and currently sit 11th on the table, having lost 14 league games.
Pochettino is not unaccustomed to dealing with a stable of stars following his 18-month stint as PSG boss, and have it on his CV of having enjoyed good relationships with the star trio comprising Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi, despite a difficult end to life in the French capital. Hence the Argentine manager should not have any major problems having to deal with Chelsea’s plethora of alleged stars.
For now, he will be intent on keeping a watchful over his future squad with some of the club’s stars now fighting for their Chelsea future ahead of the final four games of Frank Lampard’s tenure.
