Cambodia edged out Afghanistan with a 1-0 victory to achieve their first win of the 2019 Asian Cup qualification campaign.
Playing at the National Olympic Stadium, the visitors made a fast start to the contest through a series of attacks. After Norollah Amiri failed to find the target with a header from Faysal Shayesteh, Shayesteh should have opened the scoring for Afghanistan but was unable to find the target from a promising position.
Despite the overwhelming attack by the Afghans, Cambodia still found a breakthrough as Ovays Azizi’s attempted eventual clearance crashed into the back of Mony Udom and the goal was scored for Kouprey Blue in the 60th minute.
During the remaining time, the Leonardo Vitorino‘s side tightened up their defense and denied a number of attempts from the Afghans.
The all-important victory helps Cambodia to leapfrog Vietnam to the second place in Group C with three points, just one fewer than Jordan.
