Nam Dinh Sign South African International Percy Tau

Vietnamese champions Thep Xanh Nam Dinh have confirmed the signing of South African winger Percy Tau on a free transfer.

The 31-year-old was officially unveiled by the club on August 16 via a statement across their social media platforms. Tau arrives in Nam Dinh from Qatar SC, whom he had joined in the January transfer window earlier this year.

Best known for his time at Brighton & Hove Albion and later with Egyptian giants Al Ahly, Tau enjoyed a highly successful three-and-a-half-year spell in Cairo after moving from the Premier League in 2021. During his stint with Al Ahly, he featured in 126 matches and was directly involved in 46 goals (30 goals, 16 assists).

While his final months in Egypt were overshadowed by a strained relationship with the club amid his desire to leave, Tau’s legacy remains unmatched. He became the most decorated South African player in Egyptian football history, collecting two CAF Champions League titles, three Egyptian Premier League titles, and four Egyptian Super Cups.

His subsequent switch to Qatar SC proved far less fruitful, with Tau managing just nine appearances without a goal before parting ways. Earlier in his career, during his Brighton tenure, he had also spent loan spells in Belgium with Union Saint-Gilloise, Club Brugge, and Anderlecht.

On the international stage, Tau continues to be a central figure for Bafana Bafana, scoring 15 goals in 48 caps for South Africa.

Tau’s arrival further bolsters a Nam Dinh squad already stacked with attacking options, including Mahmoud Eid, formerly of Persebaya Surabaya and True Bangkok United, and Kyle Hudlin, once recognized as the tallest professional footballer. With these reinforcements, the Knights of Thanh Nam are aiming for a third consecutive V.League 1 title while also seeking to make a statement in the upcoming AFC Champions League Two campaign.
