Asian Players in Europe

Ki Sung-Yueng Departs Newcastle United

South Korea international midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng has called time on his spell with Newcastle United, as the club and player mutually agreed to terminate his contract.

The central midfielder is very highly regarded in Korea, having made an incredible 110 appearances for the Taeguk Warriors. After leaving the K.League and FC Seoul in 2009, the midfielder has represented Scottish side Celtic, as well as Swansea, Sunderland and Newcastle United in the English Premier League. In total, the midfielder has made 187 appearances in England’s top flight.

However, Ki found game time hard to come by this season, only turning out three times for Steve Bruce’s Newcastle during the current 2019-20 season.

Regardless, there will doubtless be interest in the player, who is still one of Asia’s most highly regarded players. Whether that means returning to the Far East or continuing his career in Europe remains to be seen, but at 31 years of age, Ki Sung-Yueng still has plenty to offer.
