Gus Poyet in danger of losing job at Shanghai Shenhua after just one match

Uruguayan manager Gus Poyet is fighting to save his job as Shanghai Shenhua’s manager following an embarrassing defeat which saw them eliminated from the AFC Champions League.

The Chinese club started the 2017 season with high expectations after the much-publicized signing of former Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez but failing to qualify for the group stage of the continental competition means the Uruguayan manager is in danger of losing his job after just one match.

According to reports, there is a clause in the former Sunderland manager’s contract with Shanghai Shenhua which allows the club to dismiss him in the case of elimination at the qualifying stage of the AFC Champions League.

Gus Poyet joined Real Betis at the start of the 2016-17 season but was sacked by the Spanish club. He was appointed by Shanghai Shenhua in November.
