Treble-Chasing Buriram to Face Rabbits in League Cup Final

Buriram United will face BG Pathum United in the 2022/23 Thai League Cup final after the two teams had beaten their respective semifinal opponents on Wednesday night. Buriram overcame PT Prachuap 2-0 at the Chonburi Stadium, while BGPU edged out Ratchaburi FC 2-1 at the PAT Stadium in Bangkok.

Defending Thai League Cup champions Buriram took the lead in the 16th minute, after Prachuap goalie Chatchai Bootprom had inadvertently palmed a Supachai Chaided strike into his own net.

The Killer Wasps, who won the 2019 Thai League Cup after beating Buriram on penalties, were second-best throughout the match and found themselves two goals behind in the 77th minute, after Supachai had set up Suphanat Mueanta to blast home a powerful header that went past Chatchai.

“This was a good game and a great result for our team. We have reached the final,” said a delighted Masatada Ishii, Buriram’s head coach, as quoted from Bangkok Post‘s post-match report, “The players were motivated by the presence of a large number of our fans in the stands here so this win is for the fans. Everyone in the team is committed to making an all-out effort to sweep the three domestic titles so we will be trying our best to complete the treble.”

In Wednesday night’s other semifinal, goals from Patrik Gustavsson and Teerasil Dangda sandwiching a sole Pathomchai Sueasakul strike helped BGPU to overcome Ratchaburi at the PAT, with the Glass Rabbits sealing their second Thai League Cup final appearance after they had lost the 2018 edition.

Both Buriram and BGPU will face off in May 20th’s final, which will be played at Muangthong United’s Thunderdome Stadium.
