Indonesian Starlet Baggott Joins Gillingham on Loan

EFL League One side Ipswich Town has decided to send their Indonesian star Elkan Baggott out on loan to EFL League Two side Gillingham FC where he would hopefully earn himself his much-needed game time.

Central defender Baggott will join a Gillingham side that were freshly relegated out of League One the previous season for the 2022/23 season, working underneath former Millwall and Cardiff City manager Neil Harris.

The loan move will become Baggott’s second in his career, having previously embarked on a similar spell at non-league side King’s Lynn Town in the later stages of the 2020/21 season.

The towering 19-year old defender had already participated in his first training session as a Gillingham player last Friday before taking part in the Gills’ second friendly match of the current pre-season the next day, a 2-0 defeat away at non-league Dover Athletic where Baggott played the entirety of the first half.

Speaking to the official Gillingham website, Baggott had this to say about his loan, “I’m very happy to be here, I want to improve myself and the objective for me, and us collectively, is to finish as high up in League Two as possible. It’s a really good vibe, everyone is happy. I’m not afraid to make a tackle, I try my best.”

Baggott will be hoping that Harris provides him with the adequate game time that he needed, as he seeks to retain his spot in Shin Tae-yong’s plans for the Indonesia senior national team. The Timnas Garuda has two major competitions in the horizon – the 2022 AFF Championship as well as the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
