Olusegun’s Late Show Earn Selangor Dramatic Win in Derby

Nigerian striker Ifedayo Olusegun pulled off a clutch performance on Sunday’s Selangor Derby at the Petaling Jaya Stadium, scoring twice in the last minutes of the match to earn Selangor FC a 2-1 win over Petaling Jaya City. The Matchweek 11 win allowed Selangor to not only remain 5th in the Liga Super Malaysia table, but also claim all bragging rights as top dogs in the Darul Ehsan state.

Unfettered by the presence of foreigners Olusegun, Oliver Buff, Manuel Konrad, and Jordan Ayimbila within the Selangor starting lineup, all-local PJ City managed to stun their state rivals/stadium co-tenants in the 24th minute through Ruventhiran Vengadesen, with the young defender defeating Khairulazhan Khalid in the Selangor goal with a well-taken first-time shot.

Selangor tried their best to chase the game on a muddied Petaling Jaya Stadium pitch, however Kalamullah Al-Hafiz was on fine form between the PJ City sticks, denying the Red Giants any chance of equalizing throughout most of the game.

It took Selangor until the 89th minute to breach the 25-year old Al-Hafiz’s defenses, with Olusegun planting a powerful header past the goalkeeper after latching onto an indirect free-kick. The Nigerian then struck again in the third minute of injury time with his 11th goal of the season, with his speculative shot striking PJ City defender K. Prabakaran’s back on its way into Al-Hafiz’s goal, ensuring that it will be the Red Giants who will emerge out of the latest edition of the Selangor Derby with the win.

Sunday’s other Liga Super match saw Sabah FC hosting Perak FC at the Likas Stadium and despite Nazirul Naim giving Perak the lead in the first half, Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto’s Sabah managed to fight back in the second half and prevailed 2-1 thanks to goals from Amri Yahyah and Levy Madinda, piling even more pressure on Perak head coach Chong Yee Fatt in the process as the Bos Gaurus found themselves one point off the relegation zone.
