Tottenham’s Heung-Min Son gave an emotional interview and was close to tears after Tottenham’s loss to Man Utd which was a huge dent in their Premier League top four ambitions.
It was the South Korean who scored the game’s opening, and Tottenham’s solitary, goal as the hosts went into the break 1-0 up.
The club have had issues with holding on to leads and that was again true to form as an onslaught of three second-half goals saw United snatching the three points to cause a huge dent in Tottenham’s top four hopes.
28-year-old Son, desperate to make up for his recent injury absence and give the club’s fan base something to cheer about, clearly didn’t take the failure to do so well.
In an interview with Spurs’ media team at full-time, a visibly emotional Son said:
“I’m really disappointed this afternoon. I don’t know what to say, I’m really sorry. I feel bad, I know how passionate the fans are here.
“I’m not bothered about the goal. I just really want to win because I came on last game, back from injury, we were leading and then drew.
“I played today so I really wanted to get the win, but I don’t know what to say.”
Jose Mourinho praised the attitude of his Spurs side as he focused instead on the possibilities that still remain with a Carabao Cup final to come in a fortnight.
And Son also underlined his desire to end on a high note.
“Eight games left. I know its always easy to say ‘lets be positive’ but I really want to finish the season well,” he added.
“Six points behind top four, we need to get results and hope the teams above us drop points. We have to take a big responsibility.”
The interviewer finished by saying:
“Sonny, I’ve known you for six years and have done lots of interviews with you. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you so low.”
After a long pause, Son replied:
“Yeah. It’s a really sad afternoon. I know it sounds crazy that I’m so down but football is all about the results. If we win I’m happy and if we lose I’m down for two or three days.”
Coincidentally, Son was also subjected to racist abuse following his role in a disallowed goal for United.
Tottenham issued a statement which said:
“This has again been reported to the platforms and we shall now undertake a full review alongside the Premier League to determine the most effective action moving forward. We stand with you, Sonny.”
