Bayern Hit Five, Leipzig Return to Top Four

Bayern Munich retained their dominance atop the Bundesliga table with a comfortable 5-0 win over Dusseldorf on Saturday.

The floodgates were opened when an attempt by Benjamin Pavard bounced off Mathias Jorgensen and found its way into the back of the net. This 15th-minute goal opened the floodgates at the Allianz Arena, as goals from Pavard, Alphonso Davies, and a brace by Robert Lewandowski completed the rout for the home side.

Not to be outdone, Borussia Dortmund proceeded to put six past their opponents Paderborn the following day. A hattrick by Jadon Sancho, along with goals from Achraf Hakimi, Thorgan Hazard, and Marcel Schmeltzer saw the side run out 6-1 winners.

The weekend’s other big winners were RB Leipzig, whose 4-2 victory over Köln on Monday night saw them join Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich of being assured of at least Europa League qualification for next season.

The pressure was on Julian Nagelsmann’s side as earlier victories by Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen saw them temporarily drop out of the top four but regained their place after their impressive away win.

The race for the remaining Champions League spots is shaping up to be a three-way confrontation between Gladbach, Leipzig, and Leverkusen, but a couple of poor results could see Dortmund dragged into it as well. Bayern sits six points ahead of the pack with five games left to play.
