Former Japan international midfielder Hajime Hosogai has joined Bangkok United ahead of the 2020 Thai League season.

Having spent last season with defending Thai League Champions Buriram United, Hosogai played 25 games for the Thunder Castle and impressed the supporters with his ability to control the game in midfield. However, his presence was not enough to push Buriram over the line, as they lost the league on their head to head record with Chiangrai United and had to settle for second place.

With his Buriram contact now expired, Hosogai has chosen to remain in the Thai League and favors a move to the capital with Bangkok United. The Angels, who finished fourth last season, have recently elevated themselves to become one of the biggest clubs in the country, but are yet to win any silverware since 2007.

The defensive midfielder is also likely to fit well in coach Mano Polking’s possession-based style. Bangkok United is widely regarded as playing the most ‘attractive’ football in the division. They have developed a reputation for playing out from the back with a coach who is an admirer of Pep Guardiola.

However, the club is also known to struggle defensively, which has cost them in many important league and knockout matches. Hosogai’s presence could help bring more solidity to the side and allow them to push for trophies next season.
