Thailand have announced their squad for the 2019 SEA Games, which is set to commence next week, and War Elephant’s fans will be delighted to see that it includes both Buriram United’s Supachok Sarachart and Chiangrai’s Ekanit Panya.
Both players have been involved with the senior team in recent games, featuring in the side’s memorable 2-1 win over the UAE, as well as their recent defeat and draw to Malaysia and Vietam respectively during the most recent international break.
However, some fans are skeptical of the selection, noting that the players will have very little time to rest before charging into yet another heated regional tournament and could struggle for fitness ahead of the more important AFC U23 Championships next January. However, the general consensus argues that it is important for the squad to gel before Thailand hosts the continental tournament.
Other notable names on the list include Chiangrai’s Shinnaphat Lee-Oh, Buriram’s Supachai Jaided and Rattanakorn Maikami, Chonburi’s Worachit Kanitsribampen and Bangkok United’s Anon Amornlerdsak.
Missing from the list is Port’s left-back Kevin Deeromram, who has repeatedly refused to feature for the U23 squad when called previously. Additionally, Muangthong United’s Patcharapol Intanee will not be traveling to the Philippines either – a surprising omission given that Akira Nishino selected him for the senior team earlier this year.
Lastly, Fulham youngster Ben Davis, who recently joined up with the squad after declaring his interest in representing his mother’s homeland, will not be participating at the tournament, as it does not line up with the international FIFA calendar.
Thailand will open their SEA Games campaign with a match against Indonesia in Manila next Tuesday.
