World Cup Qualifying Vietnam

Five Things Vietnam Learned From Their 1-0 Win Over Malaysia

Vietnam welcomed regional rivals Malaysia to Hanoi’s My Dinh National Stadium on Thursday night for their second 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying match, having drew fellow ASEAN rivals Thailand 0-0 in their first match. The contest was a close one, but eventually, the Golden Dragons ran out 1-0 winners over the Harimau Malaya thanks to a first-half strike from rising star Nguyen Quang Hai. Football Tribe Vietnam’s Tran Tien looks at five things that Park Hang-seo’s men picked up from their victory.

Vietnam are in the higher level in ASEAN

Vietnam have proved that they can beat (or at least cannot lose) against any other ASEAN teams at the moment. Park Hang Seo's side has defended well to deprive Malaysia of any shots on target in the match.

Cong Phuong and Van Hau proved their quality

The European based duo have played very well in the match last night. While Van Hau stopped Sumareh on the wing, Cong Phuong has caused some pressure for Malaysia defense. The goal of Quang Hai came from Cong Phuong's smart move.

Tuan Anh and Quang Hai showed one of their best performances for the national team

Quang Hai, as usual, is the biggest talent of Vietnam football at the moment. He covered a lot of space in the match with his tireless run and his goal has come as a gift for the fans at the stadium. Furthermore, Tuan Anh also had a good game with a lot of prevention and tackles. It was a pity that he can not finish the game due to a hamstring injury and was subbed off at the half time.

Vietnam are in an unbeaten run at home

Vietnam has not lost any games at home under the guidance of Park Hang-seo with 5 wins and 2 draws. If we count the matches from the previous coaches, Vietnam now have 14 matches unbeaten at home from the 0-3 defeat to Thailand in 2015.

Lack of quality strikers

Vietnam now really need the quality strikers necessary to become the strongest team in the ASEAN region. If the team finished more accurate in the last night match, they would've won against Malaysia with a bigger margin.
