Vietnam 2-0 Malaysia – The View From Vietnam

Vietnam made a major statement of intent with an impressive 2-0 victory over rivals Malaysia, putting themselves in a prime position in Group B. Amid the party on the streets of Hanoi, Football Tribe Vietnam’s Tran Tien gives us his take on what this victory means for the nation.

Right Tactics by Coach Park Hang-Seo

Against a Malaysia side with superior physical ability, coach Park correctly decided to use a more defensive approach. The team had to accept being the underdogs, and use their speed to create good counter attacking opportunities.

Solid defenders

The three centre back had a solid game with many accurate tackles to stop Malaysia's forwards. In addition to that, they also combined well to help the team keep clean sheet for the second game running.

Superb Goalkeeper

Dang Van Lam proved why he is number one choice for Vietnam between the sticks position. Despite poor finishing from Malaysia, Van Lam was still in form and helped stop two dangerous chances from visitors, which was crucial in allowing his team to win all three points.

Successful Chance Conversion

Vietnam had only four shots on target, yet they managed to score two goals. This was the opposite for their game against Laos, where they squandered many good opportunities. This new found accuracy was one of the main factors that lead to Vietnam's win.

Packed Stadium

Over 40,000 dans came to the stadium to cheer on the team for their first home match of the tournament. This so far has been the largest turnout for any side at the 2018 AFF Cup.
