Albirex Niigata completed the second straight quadruple of Singapore trophies after overcoming Philippines’ Global-Cebu FC on penalties in the Singapore Cup final on Saturday night.
The Japanese completed the same achievement with last season after having already won the Community Shield, S-League and League Cup in 2017.
The game finished 2-2 after extra-time with Tsubasa Sano broke the deadlock for Albirex with a powerful low shot into the bottom corner in the 32nd minute.
Global’s midfielder Wesley Dos Santos equalized for the Philippines side with a powerful header three minutes later.
Albirex took the lead again five minutes into extra time with a goal from Kento Nagasaki, before forward Paolo Salenga earned an equalizer for Global in the 108th minute.
In the penalty shoot-out, Global missed three of their four attempts, thus handing in the title to Albirex.
