Tianjin Quanjian stunned already crowned Guangzhou Evergrande 2-1 on Saturday in the last round of the 2017 Chinese Super League (CSL) to earn the third ticket for the AFC Champions League (ACL) next year.
Tianjin’s third place in CSL standings was confirmed after Hebei CFFC lost 5-4 to Shandong Luneng on the same day.
French striker Anthony Modeste broke the deadlock for Tianjin in the 17th minute, and Sun Ke doubled the lead in the 60th minute.
Defender Feng Xiaoting pulled one back for Guangzhou Evergrande through an in-box header 4 minutes later.
The top three teams in the league, which include champions Guangzhou Evergrande, Shanghai SIPG and Tianjin Quanjian, and the CFA Cup winners qualify for the AFC Champions League next year.
