Montenegro-born Ilija Spasojevic gets Indonesia citizenship

Bhayangkara FC striker Ilija Spasojevic has been granted Indonesian citizenship as it was announced on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old, who first moved to Indonesia in 2011, gave up his Montenegro nationality and was eligible for naturalisation after marrying a local woman.

Spasojevic is now free to play for Indonesia national team as he previously declared his love to don the Team Garuda’s jersey.

“I hope one day I can wear the Merah Putih jersey with the pride of Garuda national team. I hope all of the people and football lovers (in Indonesia) will support me,” he wrote on Instagram.

The former Melaka United star in Malaysia has played for various clubs in Indonesia, including Bali Devata, PSM Makassar, Mitra Kukar, Putra Samarinda and Persib Bandung.
