Syria coach looks for historical victory over Australia in World Cup play-off

Syria head coach Ayman al-Hakim has urged his side to play with their greatest efforts ahead of the Asian World Cup play-off against Australia.

“Reaching the Asian play-off is almost a miracle, no one expected us to reach this stage given the tough circumstances we face in our country,” al-Hakim told AFP, as quoted by the New Straits Times.

“It shows the will that the Syrians have and their ability to achieve the impossible. We hope to fulfill the dream of reaching the World Cup. It’s the dream of every Syrian, every member of our team, whether the players, coaches, officials.”

The winners go into a two-legged clash with the fourth-placed team from the CONCACAF federation, currently the United States.

If Syria can overcome both playoffs, they will make their own history by reaching the World Cup finals for the first time.
