Malaysia to host Asian World Cup playoff between Syria and Australia

Syria will host the first leg of the Asian World Cup playoff against Australia on 5 October in the Malaysia, confirmed by Football Federation Australia (FFA) on Thursday.

The Socceroos will then host Syria in the second leg of the play-off at Stadium Australia in Sydney on 10 October.

Syria, who hope to reach World Cup finals for the first time, have played all their “home” qualifiers in Malaysia since FIFA banned them from hosting matches in their war-torn country.

The winners will play another playoff against the fourth-placed side from the North and Central America qualifiers to secure a berth in the 32-team field in Russia next year.
