Gus Poyet resigns as Shanghai Shenhua manager

Gus Poyet has resigned as manager of Shanghai Shenhua after a 2-1 loss to Henan Jianye in the Chinese Super League (CSL) on Sunday evening.

This fourth straight defeat has stumbled the ambitious club to 12th place, with seven points above the relegation zone when there are only seven games left in this season.

“Mr. Poyet formally offered his resignation to Shanghai Shenhua today,” read a statement from the club, as reported by Daily Mail.

“After considering the decision, the club has agreed to accept Mr. Poyet’s resignation. From today, Mr. Poyet will no longer be the head coach of the club.”

Former head coach and current technical director Wu Jingui will take over as interim boss until the end of the season.
