Coach Mai Duc Chung appointed as Vietnam national team caretaker

Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) accepted the resignation proposal from national team head coach Nguyen Huu Thang in a meeting in Hanoi on Sunday, the Vietnam football governing body announced on the same day

Nguyen Huu Thang, who served as the manager of Vietnam U-22 team at this year’s SEA Games, offered to step down from his charge after a disastrous 3-0 loss against arch rivals Thailand in the final Group B fixture last Thursday.

“The representatives of VFF executive board expressed the gratitude for the efforts of coach Nguyen Huu Thang and his players during the period he had taken on the post,” VFF said in an official press release.

“VFF asked Thang to change his decision. He also sent his gratitude to VFF and confirmed his resignation. After listening to Thang’s confirmation, VFF representative respected his personal decision.”

Also in this meeting, VFF announced to appoint women’s team head coach Mai Duc Chung to temporarily lead the men’s squad.

Coach Chung will take on the role of Vietnam national team caretaker for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Cambodia, which comes up in less than 10 days.

The Young Golden Stars squad will assemble on 29 August for the training sessions before facing Cambodia on 5 September in Phnom Penh.
