Michael Essien was the man of the hour as his second goal of the season on Sunday night helps Persib Bandung move to the top of Indonesia Liga One.
Essien scored the only goal as Persib narrowly edged out Persipura.
The former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder came off the bench at the start of the second half to fire home from the spot.
Despite being the second best team for most of the 90 minutes, this victory marks Persib’s third successive win. The Blues are still unbeaten after the first five games of the season.
“I am happy with today’s victory,” Persib coach Djadjang Nurdjaman said in the post-match press conference.
“We worked hard against a team that put us under a lot of pressure.”
