Guangzhou Evergrande retains Chinese Super Cup title

Chinese Super League giants Guangzhou Evergrande has won their third Chinese Super Cup title following a 1-0 victory over Jiangsu FC.

The victory cemented Brazilian manager Luiz Felipe Scolari as one of the finest coaches in Chinese league history with six titles to his name. Previously, he had won two Chinese Super League titles, the Asian Champions League in 2015 as well as last year’s Chinese FA Cup and Chinese Super Cup with Guangzhou Evergrande.

The game’s only goal came from a superb strike by Alan, who was the second-ranked goalscorer in the Chinese Super League last season.

“It’s a close match. Both teams had winning chances. Maybe we did better to seize the opportunity, I think this match could be regarded as a Chinese football derby”, Scolari said after the match.

“I am here to win titles for Guangzhou. I hope we can win championships every season that I’m here”, he added.
