Malaysian Super League defending champions Johor Darul Ta’zim, who had just parted ways with manager Mario Gomez a few days before the start of the season, failed to win their first silverware as Kedah clinched the 2017 Charity Shield after defeating the Southern Tigers 5-4 on penalties.
JDT captain Safiq Rahim’s goal from the penalty spot in the 40th minute was canceled by Baddrol Bakhtiar clinical finish in the 63rd minute.
Kedah hung on to the result and went on to beat Johor Darul Ta’zim in the penalty shoot-out.
Both earned a point from this match, which also doubled up as the Malaysia Super League opener.
