Willy Caballero’s 53rd-minute gaffe set classy Croatia on the way in the game’s turning point.

The Chelsea keeper tried to clip a little ball out to team-mates and only succeeded in chipping the ball straight to Ante Rebic, who volleyed the ball back over Caballero’s head and into the net.

Caballero’s error summed up the shambolic performance but he had no chance when Luka Modic curled home a stunning 80th-minute strike.

This was supposed to finally be the 36-year-old goalkeeper’s big opportunity on the major stage, having missed out four years ago when he felt he should have been Argentina’s No 1. But his mistake here was one of someone who has barely played this season, instead of spending much of it on Chelsea’s bench watching Thibaut Courtois.

Argentina is now on the brink of elimination in Russia and Caballero is unlikely to get another opportunity, either at Chelsea or on in an international tournament.
