Buriram United have completed a domestic treble for the 2021/22 season in style after they demolished defending Thai League Cup champions PT Prachuap 4-0 on Sunday’s final at the BG Stadium in Pathum Thani. DR Congo striker Jonathan Bolingi was again the star man for the Thunder Castles with his two goals. At the same time, Peeradon Chamratsamee and Suphanat Mueanta scored one apiece to complete the demolition job.
Sunday’s final was the repeat of the 2019 Thai League Cup final, which Prachuap won after a penalty shootout at the SCG Stadium in Nonthaburi. With the 2020 edition of the Thai League Cup being abolished due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s final provides the perfect chance for Buriram to exact their revenge on the Killer Wasps.
Prachuap, who survived a relegation battle to remain in the Thai League 1 for the 2022/23 season, managed to keep up with their treble-chasing opponents, however, they were undone in the 35th minute after Bolingi’s thumping header went into Jirunpong Thamsiha’s goal.
After that, the match slowly shifted in Buriram’s favor as Masatada Ishii’s men assumed control of proceedings. The Thunder Castles doubled their lead in the 61st minute after Bolingi had latched onto a Sasalak Haiprakhon through ball and finished things off from close range.
Prachuap’s night turned from bad to worse after Saharat Pongsuwan was shown the red card in the 69th minute, however Thamsiha was on-hand to prevent Theeraton Bunmathan from tripling Buriram’s lead with the resulting free-kick.
There was no saving Thamsiha in the dying minutes of the match, however, as Buriram fired a double salvo in the space of a few minutes to seal their sixth Thai League Cup title, with Peeradon scoring in the 90th minute and Suphanat etching his name on the scoreboard in the first minute of injury time.
The triumph ensured that Buriram have sealed a domestic treble for the 2021/22 season, the fourth time that they have done so in their history.
