Superb Persib Saw-Off Selangor in Rainy Clash

Under heavy rain at the Gelora Bandung Lautan Api Stadium, Persib Bandung delivered another commanding performance, defeating Selangor FC 2-0 in their 2025/26 AFC Champions League Two clash on the night of October 23, ensuring that the Maung Bandung would go top of Group G.

A strike in each half from Adam Alis and Andrew Jung propelled Bojan Hodak’s side to the top of the group standings with seven points, moving one clear of Thailand’s True Bangkok United, whom they also beat 2-0 in their previous outing. The Angels had edged out 3rd placed Lion City Sailors of Singapore 1-0 on the same day.

For Selangor, it was another frustrating evening. The Malaysian outfit, once among the region’s historic powerhouses, remain without a point after three games, their continental return continuing to unravel.

The hosts set the tone early, with Uilliam Barros twice testing Sikh Izhan in the opening stages — first forcing a punched clearance in the eighth minute, then drawing another fingertip save with a long-range effort five minutes later. Persib’s attacking intent was clear, and it didn’t take long for them to make it count.

In the 29th minute, a swift counterattack turned defense into opportunity. Marc Klok released a clever through-ball from deep within his own half, finding Alis, who spun past Zach Clough before cutting through the middle and driving a precise low finish from the edge of the box beyond a stranded Izhan.

Selangor struggled to build momentum but nearly equalized four minutes before halftime when Chrigor curled in a dangerous cross that Persib keeper Teja Paku Alam initially fumbled. Fortunately for the hosts, he recovered in time to smother the ball ahead of Luciano Guaycochea, who was poised to pounce.

After the break, Alvin Fortes spearheaded Selangor’s response. The Curacao forward rattled the crossbar six minutes into the second half, then sliced through four defenders with a solo run that forced Teja into an acrobatic save. Moments later, the Persib keeper again came to his team’s rescue, diving low to deny Moraes from distance.

But Persib weathered the storm and soon doubled their advantage. A defensive lapse in the 66th minute proved costly for Selangor when Harith Haiqal brought down Federico Barba inside the box. Jung stepped up confidently and sent Izhan the wrong way from the spot to make it 2-0.

The French striker nearly bagged his second three minutes later, only to drag his shot wide with the goalkeeper at his mercy. Selangor’s late attempts at a comeback fizzled out, though Faisal Halim came close with a curling corner that Teja had to tip over the bar five minutes from time.

Persib closed out the match in control, their composure and tactical structure earning them a well-deserved victory in front of their home supporters. Hodak’s men will now aim to consolidate their position when they travel to Malaysia for the reverse fixture at MBPJ Stadium in Petaling Jaya on November 6, while Selangor will be desperate to finally get points on the board.

For Persib, this win reaffirmed their growing continental credentials — and under Hodak’s steady hand, the Bandung giants are quickly emerging as one of Southeast Asia’s standout sides this season.
