Are Off-Field Matters Affecting Arhan?

Widely expected to play a key role in True Bangkok United’s 2025/26 campaign, Indonesia international Pratama Arhan has found himself in an unexpected situation: his playing time has been suddenly and significantly reduced. And while many initially pointed to competition for the left-back spot as the reason, the issue may run deeper — with off-field matters in Indonesia possibly playing a part.

Arhan joined Bangkok United midway through the 2024/25 season following a disappointing stint at Tokyo Verdy. Upon arrival, he faced stiff competition from veteran Peerapat Notchaiya and experienced left-back Wanchai Jarunongkran, both of whom were regulars in Thai League 1.

To his credit, Arhan adapted well. Wanchai’s inconsistent performances opened the door for the Indonesian star to establish himself as Peerapat’s understudy. The former PSIS Semarang man made 15 appearances across all competitions, delivering crucial assists and using his trademark long throws to unsettle opposing defenses. His ability to turn defense into attack from the left flank made him a valuable weapon for head coach Totchtawan Sripan.

With Peerapat departing for ambitious newcomers Kanchanaburi Power ahead of the 2025/26 season, many expected Arhan to claim the left-back spot outright. Instead, he has only featured twice in Bangkok United’s first four league games — both appearances coming off the bench — and has been named in the substitutes bench in their continental outings. Altogether, Arhan has played just 21 minutes in the opening months of the campaign.

This limited game time has sparked debate among fans and media alike. Some argue that Wanchai simply outperformed Arhan in preseason and deserved to start. Others, however, suggest that the Indonesian international’s off-field issues may be weighing him down and affecting his focus.

In late August, Arhan filed for divorce from his wife of two years, Azizah Salsha, at the Tigaraksa Court of Religious Affairs in Tangerang Regency. While the official reason remains undisclosed, speculation has run rampant in Indonesia. Social media controversies involving Azizah — from an alleged leaked tape and suggestive posts with an ex-boyfriend to accusations of infidelity — have fueled gossip columns. The marriage itself has been the subject of political speculation, as Azizah is the daughter of Andre Rosiade, a House of Representatives member and Semen Padang FC advisor with deep ties to Indonesian football politics.

Regardless of the truth, the constant stream of rumors and the ongoing divorce proceedings may have taken a toll on Arhan’s mental focus — something that might have influenced Totchtawan’s decision to ease him out of the starting XI until he regains his best form.

That said, the season is still young. At 23, Arhan has time to steady himself and reassert his claim as one of Southeast Asia’s premier left-backs. The road ahead is long, and if he can channel his energy back onto the pitch, his chance will surely come.
