Madura United continued their resurgence under head coach Angel Alfredo Vera, holding defending champions and league leaders Persib Bandung to a 0-0 draw in Saturday’s 2024/25 Liga 1 Indonesia clash. The result extended the Laskar Sape Kerrab’s unbeaten run to five matches.
The club endured significant turmoil following the late 2023 arrest of president Achsanul Qosasi by the Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). The withdrawal of sponsorships from companies under his ownership left Madura United in crisis, forcing them to offload key players. As a result, last season’s runners-up found themselves unexpectedly battling relegation.
However, Vera’s arrival marked a turning point. The former Persipura Jayapura and RANS Nusantara coach steadied the team, guiding them to their longest unbeaten stretch of the season heading into their clash against title-chasing Persib.
Persib threatened early at Gelora Bandung Lautan Api Stadium, with David da Silva firing over from close range in the fifth minute. The hosts intensified their attack in the 23rd minute, but efforts from Tyronne Del Pino and Robi Darwis failed to hit the target.
Just before halftime, Del Pino’s free kick rattled the crossbar, coming agonizingly close to breaking the deadlock. With no goals scored, the teams went into the break level at 0-0.
After the restart, Persib continued their aggressive push, but Bojan Hodak’s side struggled to penetrate Madura United’s well-organized defense. The visitors, meanwhile, sought to capitalize on quick counterattacks but failed to convert their chances.
As full-time approached, Persib shifted tactics, relying on aerial deliveries and long-range shots in a final attempt to find the winner. However, Madura United’s disciplined backline stood firm, ensuring the match ended goalless.
Despite the draw, Persib remained atop the Liga 1 standings with 51 points, holding an eight-point lead over second-placed Dewa United. Meanwhile, Madura United stayed in 16th place with 21 points, though their unbeaten run under Vera provided a crucial boost in their relegation battle.
